Sonning Common Pre-School is a not-for-profit charity, run by an elected committee of parent volunteers.
How we’re run
We’re a registered charity (no. 1028702), run by an elected parent management committee. Working with our Manager, the committee makes sure major decisions are in the hands of the parents who use the pre-school.
Committee members review policies and practice, help with employing and appraising staff, and make decisions about the day-to-day running of the pre-school. The skills and time they give are highly valued and crucial to our success.
The committee year
- The committee is elected at our Annual General Meeting (AGM) in June. Parents are told in good time, so they have the chance to attend.
- The committee generally meets once a month.
- Members usually join for at least a year, with changeover at the AGM, when new volunteers are sought.
- Additional members can join during the year: up to three can be co-opted during a school year, with a maximum of 12 members at any one time.
- A list of committee members, with contact details and photos, is on our noticeboard.
Join the committee
Joining the committee is a great way to get involved in your child’s first school experiences and give something positive back to the local community. You may be able to use the skills you already have, or learn new ones – and it’s a great way to meet other parents. By sharing your views as a parent through the committee, you help make sure the pre-school is run to meet the needs of parents and children.
Fundraising
Government funding and fees cover our staff and the general running of the pre-school. The committee drives our fundraising, and all proceeds go back into the pre-school to provide new equipment and resources for the children.
Grants and donations
As a charity, we’re always very grateful for donations of funding and equipment, and we regularly apply to local organisations for funds towards specific resources. If the company you work for has a charity giving scheme that awards grants or equipment, please let us know how we can apply.
Pre-School Learning Alliance
We’re a member of the Pre-School Learning Alliance, an educational charity specialising in the early years. We follow its values of helping children to succeed by creating the childcare families need, and actively promoting parental involvement and inclusive practice.
